Calling gas a \u201ctransition\u201d fuel obscures its enormous impact on the climate. Between 2010 and 2021, gas consumption contributed nearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/world-energy-outlook-2022\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the rise in global CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emissions &#8211; more than coal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gas investments that companies like Mitsubishi and GE are planning today will have long-lived impacts on the climate. Mitsubishi\u2019s LNG Canada project is planned to operate for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lngcanada.ca\/uploads\/subpages\/LNG-Canada-2021-2022-IAAC-Annual-Report.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least 40 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning it\u2019s meant to export gas until at least 2065, long after the world will need to have reached net zero CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emissions. Similarly, new gas-fired power plants such as those being built by GE have a lifetime of around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/marketintelligence\/en\/news-insights\/trending\/gfjqeFt8GTPYNK4WX57z9g2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gas needs to be rapidly phased out if we\u2019re to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement &#8211; according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), gas use should fall <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/world-energy-outlook-2022\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">63%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by 2040 in order to keep global warming below 1.5\u00b0C. The IEA has made clear that this means <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/net-zero-by-2050\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no new oil or gas fields can be approved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for development. Market Forces\u2019 goal is to stop the flow of finance to companies and projects that seek to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expand<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the fossil fuel industry. It is not a case of \u201cturning off the taps overnight\u201d &#8211; it\u2019s about recognising that increasing fossil fuel production is both at odds with a safe climate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fossil fuel industry, on the other hand, wants us to think that coal, oil and gas are essential for energy security, but that isn\u2019t the case. The global energy crisis sparked by Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine has shown this very clearly, with countries like Bangladesh facing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/energytracker.asia\/bangladesh-struggling-with-pricey-lng\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rolling blackouts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of sky-high imported gas prices. Changing out fossil fuels for renewable energy will make energy systems more secure and less exposed to price fluctuations. It\u2019s also one of the most cost-effective ways to slow down climate change <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/syr\/downloads\/report\/IPCC_AR6_SYR_SPM.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the IPCC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;Is it possible to have 100% renewable energy? Globally, power and heat generation accounts for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/world-energy-outlook-2022\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">39%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emissions. Fortunately, this is also where we have the most readily available substitutes in the form of solar and wind power which, combined with energy storage technologies like large-scale batteries, can and should replace fossil fuel power. Dozens of academic studies have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/document\/9837910\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that relying on renewable energy for 100% of our energy needs is feasible globally at low cost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Importantly, renewables will also improve energy security and affordability. However, this approach is riddled with problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, hydrogen and ammonia are unlikely to reduce power emissions enough. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transitionzero.org\/insights\/japans-toxic-narrative-on-ammonia-cofiring\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of power systems across emerging Asia found that substituting coal with ammonia at a 50\/50 rate would still not achieve a lower emissions intensity than typical gas plants, or come close to what\u2019s needed to limit global warming to 1.5\u00b0C. Furthermore, the manufacture of hydrogen and ammonia has the potential to be extremely emissions intensive &#8211; in fact, some production methods being pushed by fossil fuel companies today result in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketforces.org.au\/info\/hydrogen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher emissions intensity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than just burning coal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generating power from hydrogen and ammonia is also expensive compared to almost every alternative. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transitionzero.org\/insights\/advanced-coal-in-japan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the Japanese power system forecast that the majority of renewable energy technologies will be cheaper than coal by 2030, with hydrogen and ammonia a \u201cdistant second\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For these reasons and others, well-known energy expert <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebreich.com\/the-clean-hydrogen-ladder-now-updated-to-v4-1\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Liebreich<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has ranked power generation as one of the least financially competitive or essential uses for hydrogen and ammonia in the future. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;Is it possible for Japan to meet its energy demand solely with renewables?&#8221; icon_color=&#8221;#6ACD75&#8243; use_icon_font_size=&#8221;on&#8221; icon_font_size=&#8221;25px&#8221; open_icon_color=&#8221;#6ACD75&#8243; open_use_icon_font_size=&#8221;on&#8221; open_icon_font_size=&#8221;25px&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; title_font=&#8221;Poppins|700|||||||&#8221; title_line_height=&#8221;1.3em&#8221; closed_title_font=&#8221;Poppins|600|||||||&#8221; closed_title_line_height=&#8221;1.3em&#8221; background_color=&#8221;RGBA(255,255,255,0)&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;|||0px|false|false&#8221; border_color_all=&#8221;RGBA(255,255,255,0)&#8221; border_width_bottom=&#8221;2px&#8221; border_color_bottom=&#8221;#f2f2f2&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple studies (such <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agora-energiewende.de\/en\/publications\/renewable-pathways-to-climate-neutral-japan\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emp.lbl.gov\/publications\/2035-japan-report-plummeting-costs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) have found that basing Japan\u2019s electricity system on renewable energy is both technically achievable and economically rational. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japan spent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eta-publications.lbl.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/lbnl_2035_japan_report_english_02.27.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3.9 trillion yen on importing coal and gas for power generation in 2020<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Geopolitical uncertainties around Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine have caused fossil fuel prices to soar, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketforces.org.au\/campaigns\/international\/japan-lng-expansion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worsening Japan\u2019s trade deficit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and draining national wealth.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> One study found that Japan will be able to save <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emp.lbl.gov\/publications\/2035-japan-report-plummeting-costs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">around 3.3 trillion yen in 2035<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by reducing coal and gas imports. Multiple sources suggest renewable energy will be able to supply between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.renewable-ei.org\/en\/activities\/reports\/20230411.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eta-publications.lbl.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/lbnl_2035_japan_report_english_02.27.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">90<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">% of Japan\u2019s electricity demand in 2035 without coal power and with minimal (1% or less) use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketforces.org.au\/campaigns\/international\/investors-left-blue-by-fossil-hydrogen-and-ammonia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hydrogen\/ammonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The rest can be supplied by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.renewable-ei.org\/en\/activities\/reports\/20230411.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">existing gas power plants without needing new and replacement plants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> until achieving 100% renewables.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To deliver on a fossil-free electricity system by 2050 and the interim milestones mentioned above, Japan needs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eta-publications.lbl.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/lbnl_2035_japan_report_english_02.27.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swift and strong policy and market <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reform. Non-state actors, especially market leaders including the corporates targeted by Asia Shareholder Action, play a key role in shaping national policies and markets that drive a fossil-free energy
